The Chief Minister wants to do the Mayor's job, and keeps most of the power and finances needed for the city with the State government, rather than devolving them. The Mayor is attending to complaints from the public and trying to resolve them, which is good, but surely that seems like the Commissioner's job. In August last year, several individuals and groups working to save and protect different lakes of Bangalore met to exchanges notes and see how they could help one another. A report on this meeting can be read here. After interactions over the past year, Arbind Kumar Gupta and Balasubramanian Thirunavukkarasu, the two gentlemen who initiated this meeting, felt that the way forward was a formal platform - one that could bring different lake groups/trusts and social organizations/NGOs in Bangalore together, represent the voices and concerns of people of Bangalore, and work with government agencies for rejuvenation of lakes in Bangalore. After the sudden threat posed by the propsed re-alignment of the Metro Rail track along Bannerghatta Road, homeowners suddenly were threatened with the destruction of their homes.  When it was a matter of road-widening, we were able to protest at the chopping down of trees and the increase in traffic; but now, the Government can say that it is developing public transportation and this is for our own good.   After a storm of protests, the proposed re-alignment has been halted...for the time being. But there is no guarantee that our Government will not suddenly start the process again, and…

The idea crystallized into Namma Jathre, Our Festival signifying that it is an event by and for everyone. When we first held the Jathre at Cubbon Park in November 2006, nearly 40 citizen's groups and 7000 people including the general public participated. This increased to over 40 organizations and…
