  It was lovely to see the decorations at Bangalore Club for the New Year. Here's the main building, and the majestic 100-year-old conifers:  Brigadier Hill Annexe was also lit up:  And so was the passage between the two:  ⊕

   Usha Madhuranathan and her daughter, Deepa Vaishnavi, have a "Kolu" display with a difference at their home in Banashankari. Long ago, Usha decided that she was less interested in having just a display of dolls. She would determine a theme each year, and arrange the kolu around that. Yesterday, because of Smt. Saraswathi, who is a long-standing devotee and visitor of avery old temple in Vasanthapura...the Vasantha Vallabha Raaya Swami Devasthana, dedicated to Vishnu and Lakshmi, I happened to visit it, and I came away deeply impressed.Here's the temple....Another view:Here are the beautiful brass Dhwajasthambha (flagpole) and the pavilion behind it:Some more views of the decorations outside the top: As one enters, one sees haldi and kumkum bowls at the feet of the Dwara Palaka (Guardian of the entrance):Here's a view of one of the Dwara Palakas:  At the entrance is the Sannidhi of Garuda, Vishnu's vehicle:By sheer chance,…

Vinay Sreenivasa and I organized a photowalk to document the last of the beautiful promenade known as Ambedkar Veedhi. One would think that a Government would have the aesthetic sense to leave this most historic of boulevards alone...but no, the Metro must needs run right through this last bastion of public spaces and greenery.So, to mark the murder of yet another public space, and the funeral of the greenery, we decided to photo-document the stretch of Ambedkar Veedhi...We started with the desecration that was a tree-shaded Minsk Square, not so long ago; now it's a desert of cement and concrete:We…

The last week was a busy one for INTACHers, what with two heritage walks back-to-back, besides a lot of parleys and planning for a forthcoming event (you'll hear more about it soon). Intach members with children from SECA at Bangalore Fort. Pic courtesy: Meera Iyer. Saturday's Parichay (as our heritage walks are called) was led by Krupa Rajangam and was at Whitefield, where the altar of a historic church might be sacrificed at the altar of ‘development', if the BBMP has its way. Both residents of Whitefield and other Bangaloreans turned out in good numbers to learn more about this…

I posted once about the Monkey Puzzle Tree with its beautiful leaves (go see the huge trees near the Glass House  in Lalbagh, if you can!)and later, I got theMonkey Puzzle Butterfly amongst other things, on a nature trail:A few days ago, it was very nice to see that someone still cares about our Bangalore heritage, and has re-created the Monkey Puzzle architectural detail for their home:Possibly this feature was so called because monkeys used to sit on it...it's also called "Monkey Top".
