Those familiar with Puttenahalli Lake will know that one end of the lake, towards L&T South City has 100-odd shanty/ semi-pucca/ pucca houses (generally referred to as the encroachment "slum"), relocation pending since the last few years.    Around mid August this year, 21 volunteers from 14 countries arrived in southern India to work and learn from marginalized communities about their challenges pertinent to health and sanitation. They were part of "Health on Stage", a six week project where they learnt to use forum theatre to initiate simultaneous dialogues on public health in low income areas of Bangalore, Mysore and Chennai. And on 30th September, the 3 groups of participants, their trainers and faciliators gathered in Bangalore to share their experiences with healthcare professionals, media persons and theatre artists.It is well known that water related illnesses are…

BBMP’s Public Health Committee President, K N Geeta Shashikumar visited hotels and Kalyana Mantapas in Sheshadripuram, Shivananda Circle and Kumara Krupa areas and inspected them. She gave orders to issue notices to Kamat Yatri Nivas Hotel and Lakshmipadmanabha Kalyana Mantapa owners on the grounds of not maintaining cleanliness and hygiene. She said that it was very important for hotels and marriage halls to maintain good hygiene and to provide customers with hot water, especially in the rainy season as it is prone to contagious diseases. She cautioned the owners that strict disciplinary measures would be undertaken for failure to do…

Almost every other week, outside my office on Sarjapur Road, I see an elderly gentleman stopping by a tree in the morning, to relieve himself.  A Nirmala Shauchalaya stands barely 100 metres away from this recipient tree. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) budget ambitiously speaks about a lot that the city needs - storm water drains, flyovers, underpasses, parks, playgrounds - so on and so forth. Chalta hai….

We seem to not bother too much when things don't work...or when people don't work! Here's a busy, busy autorickshaw driver...We also like to make things work in our own way, to suit ourselves....the regular fence and gate will not have enough space for the car to fit in, so we customize it.. an ingenious construction which does not violate the letter of the law, as this is the driveway, even though the fence goes outside the dimensions of the residential plot!
