On 26th September 2014, over 200 National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers from Government First Grade College, Yelahanka attended a five-hour workshop on Lake Conservation. The workshop was organised by Mr Govindraju, Program Co-ordinator NSS and conducted by members of Yelahanka United Environment Association (YUVA) - Mr Ravi Gangadharan, Mr Jagadeesh Giri and Mr Jagadeesh KT, supported by Ms Deepa. Mr Muniraju, Corporator of BBMP Ward 4 and Dr HR Prabha, Principal of the college were present at the event. YUVA members spoke on how lakes can solve the problem of water shortage and excess rainfall which floods the city. They presented the methodology adopted…

Another ‘Cycle Day’ was successfully conducted by Yelahanka United Environment Association (YUVA) in partnership with Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT), Urban Development Department, Government of Karnataka and BCOS - in Yelahanka New Town next to Allalasandra Lake this 14th September 2014, Sunday morning (6:30 to 10:30 a.m.).   The last Cycle Day was held a couple of months ago and can be read about here. Cycle Days are being organized with the objective of popularizing cycling within the locality thereby helping in reducing motorized traffic, reduce pollution, reduce fuel consumption and improve health and fitness.   Around 4500 citizens including Honorable Speaker of…

Over the last few months, several jobs related to the rejuvenation of Allalasandra Lake have progressed. Yelahanka United Environment Association (YUVA), the association that has been working closely with the BBMP for this lake has had multiple meetings with Government officials and BWSSB for stoppage of sewage entering  the lake through storm water drains. The short term solution in place is a huge sand bund to stop sewage entering the lake. For the long term, BWSSB has agreed to provide a mini Sewage Treatment Plant for which the DPR work is going on. On June 8, 2014, the Chennai Trekking Club (CTC) in association with The Hindu newspaper organized the 5th year edition of the Chennai Coastal Cleanup and the 1st edition of India Clean Sweep - a major awareness campaign on environmental conservation. The location chosen was Yelahanka's Puttenahalli Lake in north Bangalore. More details on the planning of the event here. The main objective of this initiative was to create more awareness among the general public against the use of plastics and reduction of our garbage footprint through segregation, re-cyling and reuse and keep our lakes clean too. The cleanup was inaugurated…
