My driving licence expires on 22 Oct '19 (My 65th birthday falls on 23 Oct '19). I found that I have to apply for a renewal within 30 days prior to its expiry, or do it later with a fine. Only part of the process can be done online, and I did it. I went to Parivahan Sewa at https://parivahan.gov.in/parivahan/ and under "Online Services", clicked on "Driving Licence Related Services". I got this page: https://sarathi.parivahan.gov.in/sarathiservice9/stateSelection.do I selected my state (Karnataka). Under "Driving Licence" on the left hand side, I clicked on "Services on Driving Licence (Renewal/Duplicate/Aedl/Others)" I found the following…

The Kundanahalli junction is "the" gateway for lakhs of commuters going in and out of Whitefield. People from across the city come in for work in the area as this is a tech hub while school children traverse in their buses to head to the multitude of schools in the Whitefield/Varthur area. Across Bangalore and in fact outside too, people know how bad the traffic is this side of town. We have therefore engaged in the Traffic warden program for years to contribute our time and effort to help manage the traffic. An underpass was to come at the junction 5…

The new IRCTC website should make booking easy, right? Wrong! I booked for a train, and then decided to advance the date of travel. I knew this was possible, but could not find out any way to do it on the site. So I googled, and finally called 139 to ask how to do it. The reply: advancement ("preponement") or postponement cannot be done on e-tickets, they can only be done on tickets booked at the railway counters! You think that's funny? Wait. I tried to book two tickets. One is confirmed, and the other one is RAC1. The site…

All of us would agree there is a growing need for last mile connectivity in our public transport system. With the introduction of the Metro Rail and expansion of MRTS, the idea of a multi modal transport system is definitely a welcome move. Given the popularity and  large scale acceptance for shared public transport systems worldwide, is this not the right time for the administration to introduce clear guidelines and a set of rules for the privately operated share autos ? Over the last several weeks diesel share autos which ply between Retteri and Perambur have been taking a detour from…

I was at the launch of the Cycle to Work campaign along with the Mayor and the Bicycle Mayor last week. It was very nice to see many cyclists come together, hopeful of renewed efforts to make their commutes and other rides easier and safer. The program is designed to enroll corporates in supporting their employees who cycle to work, and a template for that is being put together. Looking back at lake revival efforts over the last decade, I feel the push for cycling can also work, if I we adopt the key learnings. I offered a few thoughts…

Circular commute, similar to a ring road. Suburban trains in India are also much cheaper than the Metro. Why should you demand trains in Bengaluru? 1. Building the Suburban train network is the least disruptive on Bengaluru. It won't affect the existing roads with diversions and bottlenecks while tracks are expanded, more trains run & stations fixed. Ride to demand the suburban train network! 2. It is most beneficial for Bengaluru. Like Chennai, up to 20 lakh people per day can commute if commissioned properly.
