Achieving ecological and financial sustainability on organic farms

Many small and startup organic farms struggle because new farmers face a steep learning curve in a variety of areas – including growing skills, farm management and marketing their produce. In this 2-day workshop in Bangalore, organised by New Farmer, Karan Manral and Yogita Mehra will share experiences and best practices derived from hands-on management of organic farms.

The workshop will cover a variety of topics and share practical solutions that contribute significantly to success on small organic farms.

  • Where should I start? For a generation that knows little about agriculture, we discuss things that should be considered before getting started.
  • Where should I grow? Can I revive my family farm? What kind of land is good for farming? Does it make sense to lease farm land?
  • What type of farming should I practice? Market gardening, homestead farming, agro-tourism, permaculture, bio-dynamic farming etc?
  • What can I grow easily? Seeking answers based on soil, locations, preferences and ease-of-growing with an understanding of seasonal factors and changes.
  • What are the key challenges to farm sustainability? Labour issues? Costs of inputs? Lack of technical know-how? Capital expenses?
  • How do I discover my market? Unclear market for your produce? Finding profitable customers? Building a brand for our produce?
  • What can I do with my surplus? The sale of farm surplus is an important step towards farm sustainability, but it’s not easy. How can I plan for minimising wastage and maximising returns?
